Station Personnel

Wing Commander Arthur Haliburton Wilson enlisted with the Royal Naval air service In England in 1918 Shortly before the armistice in that year he qualified as a pilot and was posted as an instructor in the R.A.F. He was demobilized in 1919 and came to Canada in 1923.

Four years later he was flying again. This time in Canada with a commercial company. After a refresher course at Camp Borden, he was engaged as a pilot by the British Columbia Airways. With this company he worked both as an instructor and as pilot on the Victoria-Vancouver-Seattle run.

In 1929 he was engaged as Instructor by the Aero Club of British Columbia and remained in that position until the outbreak oif war,with the exception of a few months when he flew for the Alaska Washington Airways at the time they started their Vancouver passenger service.

In 1933, while instructing at the Aero Club, he joined the 111th Vancouver coast artillery co-operation squadron, and in 1937 was placed in command. He was called into active service with his squadron at the outbreak of war and remained in command until he was posted to the Dauphin school.

Holding the post of chief flying Instructor on the staff at the Dauphin school is Squadron Leader R. E. Dupont, an Australian pilot loaned to the R.C.A.F. by the R.A.F.

In August, 1939, he was loaned to the R.C.A.F., and came to Canada to train flying Instructors at Camp Borden and Trenton. He held that post until he was
transferred to Dauphin.

Course 22: February 20 - May 28, 1941

Ceremony held in the Drill Hall. Wing Commander Wilson pinned the wings on the graduates and addressed a few complimentary remarks to each.

Afterwards he addressed the class a a whole. Presentation of the wings should really be regarded as the beginning of their careers as pilots, he said, and extorted them to keep open minds and continue to learn.

"No matter whether you are going overseas or are to become instructors, remember that you are doing an important task."

Course 25: April 8 - June 21, 1941

Group Captain W.D.F. Bonham-Carter, senior air staff officer, No. 2 Training Command, presented wings to the 48 graduates, addressing a few words of congratulation to the graduates individually as he pinned the wings on their breasts. At the conclusion of the ceremony the Group Captain addressed the class a a whole. He extorted them to be cautious and not to take unnecessary risks but not to hesistate to take whatever risk arose in their line of duty. He wished the Godspeed and good luck.

June 28, 1941: +(R/78412) Lionel Roher attempted a roll at low altitude near Meadow Portage, lost control of the machine, crashed and burst into flames. Accident witnessed by (R/74909) LAC R.H. Sherback who was flying nearby.

Course 29: May 28 - August 8, 1941

Wings parade held at 1630 hours. 58 graduates were called by S/L Welstead to receive their wings from W/C A.H. Wilson. The C.O. advised the newly-winged pilots not to consider this the end of their training, but to continue to absorb knowledge of their craft all their flying days. Three other squadrons formed a square with the graduating class. After the presentation of wings, the parade under the command of S/L Gross marched past with W/C Wilson taking the salute.
